Auxerre leads convincingly after second tournament day

The second day of the Marveld C Tournament is already history and rarely it has been so exciting as at present in the Pepsi Group. No less than 4 teams with 4 different nationalities tie for the first group position with 7 points.

Experienced Marveld Participant Manchester United shares this place with newcomers Lokomotic Moskou, Valencia and Anderlecht. Grol holds the last position in this group but does it with creditable football. This morning in the opening match against Anderlecht Wessel Arink made a beautiful goal after passing two Belgian footbalplayers.

Anderlecht - SV Grol: 2-1

Tomorrow morning SV Grol will have to play against last but one Feyenoord. But the team from Rotterdam is still in the position to rise in the group. If they win from Grol and the other matches end a draw there will be 5 teams sharing the first group position. All three last group matches will take place at 09.30.

Newcomer Auxerre leads convincingly in the Qwint group with 3 winnings and a draw. Coach Jérémy Spender is very impressed with the tournament. “The organisation is great, the supporting staf including the medical staff is magnificent. We feel as if we are participating in a mini Champions League.” Being famous for their youth education (Auxerre was one of the first in France with a youth section) Auxerre often gets invitations for French tournaments and very rarely they play abroad. Last weekend they played an international Whitsun tournament in Lyon.

Auxerre wasn’t personally familiar with one of the other participants before this tournament. Coach Spender notices that he recognizes the style of the main team in few of its youth teams. “I can compare the big Real Madrid with their under 15 team in the way they are playing”, explains Auxerre’s coach. The French team had not expected to be the first in their group after two days, tired as they are from a heavy tournament and a long coach ride. “They boys played for 200% which is the main reason they achieved today’s results”, said Spender proudly.

Real Madrid - Auxerre: 0-1

Meeting Real Madrid on the field (Auxerre won with 1-0) was already a dream come true for Auxerre and if the French team happens to reach the final they would like to play against Manchester United. “We feel a little French squad among all these illustrious teams”, according to Jérémy Spender. Sunday morning at 10.20 h Auxerre will play her last group match against FC Twente/Heracles and after two times twenty minutes it will be known for with final position they are allowed to compete.
